Our Guide to Going Back to School or College with a Stoma

Helping young ostomates feel confident, prepared and supported.

Whether you’re packing your bag for a new school year or getting ready to start college, heading back to education with a stoma can feel like a big step. But with a little preparation, the right support, and a few practical tips, you can walk through those doors with confidence!

Here’s our guide to help you feel ready for anything…

Build your stoma kit (and keep it handy)

It’s always a good idea to carry a small, discreet bag with a few stoma essentials, just in case. Pack a couple of spare bags, wipes, disposal bags, and any extras you normally use like barrier spray or rings. Keep it in your school bag, locker, or even in a friend’s bag you trust. It’s not about expecting a leak, it’s about feeling calm, prepared, and in control.

Scope Out the Toilets

Getting familiar with your surroundings can make a big difference. Try to locate accessible toilets or private cubicles early on, maybe even during your first few days. You might feel more comfortable changing your bag during quieter times like before morning break or lunch. Find out what works for you and take your time.

Speak to staff (If you’re comfortable)

You don’t have to tell anyone about your stoma, but letting a key staff member know (like a head of year or your form tutor) can make things easier. If you ever need to leave class quickly, take time off, or get support, they’ll already understand the situation and can help without fuss.

Think about friends and the potential conversations you can have

This one’s completely personal. Some ostomates find it empowering to talk openly about their stoma. Others prefer to keep it private. There’s no right or wrong! It’s simply your choice. If you do want to share, it can help to practice what you’d like to say beforehand. And remember, anyone worth your time will respect your journey.

Lunch time confidence

New term, new snacks, but don’t feel pressure to experiment straight away. Stick to foods you know work well for your body, especially during that first week back. Bring a water bottle too, because hydration helps with energy, concentration, and stoma health.

PE, sports and physical activities

Yes, you can still join in! Having a stoma doesn’t mean missing out. A stoma support belt or snug-fitting base layer can give you a little extra comfort and confidence. And if something doesn’t feel right, say something. You deserve to enjoy moving your body, your way.

Mental health matters

Back-to-school nerves are normal, and they can feel a bit more intense when you’re living with a stoma. If you’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or just not yourself – reach out. Talk to someone you trust, whether it’s a parent, friend or a teacher.  You’re not alone, and you don’t have to go through anything on your own.

Connect with other ostomates

Sometimes the best tips come from people who’ve been there. There are brilliant online communities and forums where young ostomates share experiences, ask questions, and offer support. It’s a great way to remind yourself that you’re not the only one, and you’re doing brilliantly.

Wherever you’re heading this term, please realise that you’ve already overcome more than most. And you’ve got this!
