Summer Style, Confidence and Life with a Stoma

When it comes to confidence, colour and keeping it real, few do it like Oktober. As one of our amazing Oakmed ambassadors, she’s not only an ostomate but also a fierce advocate for body positivity and personal style, no matter the season.

Fresh from her summer style haul, we caught up with her to chat fashion tips, favourite finds, and how her stoma fits into it all.

How would you describe your summer style in three words?

Colours. Patterns. High-waisted.

Tell us about a go-to outfit from your recent style haul. What made you feel amazing in it?

It’s tough to pick just one! But I absolutely loved the floral maxi skirt and t-shirt – it’s that perfect smart-casual combo. The bold colours and pretty patterns made me feel amazing!

Do you shop differently since having a stoma? Any tips for dressing confidently with one?

I’ve found high-waisted bottoms to be my go-to because they’re comfier with my stoma and feel more secure. But honestly, whatever you wear, wear it because you love it. Confidence shines through when you feel good. I’m a big fan of bold patterns too, because they draw the eye and take the focus off the bag, which helps me feel more at ease

What’s your go-to trick for staying cool and comfortable in summer with a bag?

Summer with a stoma can be hot – literally. I find that ostomy underwear really helps. That second layer stops the bag rubbing and keeps the sweat off my skin. Ostomy bag covers make a big difference too. And let’s be honest, cold showers are a must – stoma or not!

How do you manage waistbands, swimwear or tight clothing with your stoma?

At first, I stuck to loose clothing because I was nervous – but now I know that tighter outfits are totally fine with a stoma. I personally love high-waisted styles for that extra bit of comfort. When it comes to swimwear, ostomy-friendly designs make a huge difference – Vanilla Blush is my go-to!

Do you have any favourite brands or styles that work really well for you?

I love all the high street brands and I really think you can make any fashion work for you! Right now, I’m loving striped trousers; they’re super flattering and great for drawing the eye away from your stoma bag.

What would you say to someone who’s just had stoma surgery and feels nervous about clothes or body image?

Your body is incredible – even if you don’t feel it right now, you are beautiful!  Wear what makes you happy, choose comfort, and the confidence will follow. When you feel good, you glow.

What does body confidence mean to you today vs. before your surgery?

Before my stoma, I used to hide my body – I wasn’t confident and often chose baggy clothes to cover up. But now, I’m proud of what my body’s been through and what it’s done for me. I’ve found a new confidence, and my style reflects that – it’s like fashion became a way of celebrating my journey and embracing who I am.

Oktober is living proof that style, confidence and comfort can all go hand-in-hand, with a stoma. Whether she’s rocking bold prints or high-waisted trousers, her approach reminds us that it’s not about hiding your body, it’s about owning it!

Fashion is just one way to express who you are and every ostomate deserves to feel proud, powerful and totally themselves in whatever they wear.
