Embracing Autumn as an Ostomate – Comfort, Confidence and Care

As the seasons shift and autumn settles in, it’s the perfect time to focus on comfort, confidence, and self-care. For ostomates, the change in weather and routine can bring new considerations, but also fresh opportunities to feel good, eat well, and recharge.

Dressing for Comfort and Confidence

Cooler days mean layers, and that’s great news for comfort and style. Soft, breathable fabrics and smart layering can help you stay warm without bulk, while well-fitted or high waisted trousers, jeans, or leggings can offer gentle support around your stoma. For extra confidence, add longer-length tops, shirts, jumpers, or jackets that suit your personal style. Accessories like scarves, hats, or lightweight outerwear can complete the look while keeping you comfortable through the season.

Autumn Comfort Food for Ostomates

Autumn is all about hearty, warming meals. Think soups, stews, and seasonal veg like carrots, parsnips, and squash. These can be gentle on the digestive system and easy to adapt to your needs. Slow-cooker recipes are a great way to create flavour-packed meals without fuss, perfect for busy days or when you want something nourishing and comforting. Our Ambasador, Ed, shared that his go-to autumn comfort foods are big bowls of pasta like spaghetti bolognese, and his mum’s apple cake – a favourite he never gets tired of!

Prioritising Mental Health

Shorter days and darker evenings can sometimes affect mood. Making time for light, mood-boosting activities, whether it’s a walk in autumn sunshine, a catch-up with friends, or creative hobbies can help. Our ambassadors often say that staying connected with the ostomycommunity is a big source of encouragement too.

Rebuilding Routine After Summer

Summer can be full of spontaneity, but autumn often calls for a steadier routine. Use this time to revisit habits that make you feel your best, whether that’s regular meal patterns, a consistent sleep schedule, or daily self-care moments. A little structure can go a long way in supporting wellbeing.

Prepping for Colder Weather

As temperatures drop, think about how colder conditions might affect your stoma care. If you’re heading out, consider a small, insulated pouch for your essentials. Wearing an extra base layer, support garment, or a high-waisted thermal option can keep you warm while also offering gentle protection for your stoma. And if you’re unsure on how the winter months might affect your routine, it’s a good time to check in with your stoma care nurse for advice and reassurance before the season sets in.

Autumn can be a time of comfort, connection, and care, and with a few thoughtful tweaks, it’s a season to enjoy to the fullest.
