Living with a stoma changes your life and while it might not be visible to the world, the strength it takes to adapt, heal, and carry on deserves to be seen.
This July, we’re celebrating Disability Pride Month – a growing movement here in the UK and around the world that honours disabled people, challenges outdated narratives, and promotes visibility, inclusion, and pride in every form.
And yes, that includes ostomates.
A hidden disability is still a disability
Let’s talk about the big one first: you don’t need to “look disabled” to be disabled.
Living with a stoma often means managing fatigue, pain, anxiety, dietary limitations, medical routines, and social discomfort. And because many of those experiences aren’t immediately visible, ostomates are often met with doubt, awkward questions, or even judgement, especially when using accessible toilets or asking for additional support.
But disability isn’t about what others can see. It’s about how a condition affects your daily life. And if you’re living with a stoma, whether due to IBD, Crohn’s disease, endometriosis, cancer, trauma, or any other condition, you have every right to claim your space in this conversation.
You are valid. You are not alone. And you deserve to be seen.
What Does Disability Pride Mean?
Disability Pride Month isn’t about sympathy, or simply raising awareness for the sake of it. It’s about celebrating identity, resilience, and everything disabled people contribute to society, not in spite of their differences, but because of them.
It’s about saying: “My disability is not something to hide. It’s part of who I am. And I’m proud of that.”
For ostomates, that can be deeply personal. Some people feel ready to share their story and show their stoma. Others prefer to keep things private, and that’s completely okay too.
Pride is about choice. And every step you take, whether it’s wearing a bikini, using a RADAR key, opening up to a friend, or just giving yourself some grace, is worth celebrating.
Breaking the Stigma
Even in 2025, there’s still stigma around stomas, disability, and difference. Too many people still associate disability with limitation, pity, or shame.
Disability Pride Month pushes back against that by showing the truth: disabled people are bold, capable, successful, joyful, stylish, smart, funny, and full of life. And that includes ostomates.
You are not less because you have a stoma. You are more! You are more resilient, more compassionate, and more tuned into what really matters.
Why This Month Matters for Ostomates
Disability Pride Month is a time to:
- Talk about hidden disabilities and how they impact real lives.
- Share honest stories from people living with stomas.
- Celebrate our community, our progress, and the space we’ve claimed.
- Encourage others who might still be early in their journey and unsure where they fit.
It’s also a reminder that representation matters. The more ostomates are seen on social media, in ads, in everyday life, the more we can shift the narrative from shame to pride.
At Oakmed, we believe in celebrating every part of the ostomy journey, not just the practical stuff, but the emotional, personal, and powerful moments too.
So, this Disability Pride Month, we want to say this to every ostomate:
- You deserve dignity
- You deserve support
- You deserve joy
- You deserve to be proud of everything you’ve overcome
Whether you shout it from the rooftops or simply take a quiet moment to acknowledge how far you’ve come, you are part of something bigger. And we’re proud to stand with you!
