Do you have a:

  • Colostomy

A surgical procedure that brings the end of the large intestine (colon) through the abdominal wall to carry faeces out of the body into a bag

A colostomy can be formed from any part of the colon depending on the underlying condition but most commonly they are formed from the descending colon and will appear on the left side of the abdomen.

The colons job is to absorb water and salts. This means that the further down the colon your stoma has been made, the more thick the output.

  • Ileostomy

An ileostomy is a surgical opening constructed by bringing the end or loop of small intestine (ileum) out onto the surface of the skin. Waste from the small intestine will pass out of the ileostomy into an external pouching system. It most commonly will be placed on the right side of the abdomen.

The output from the ileostomy will be very watery to begin with but with most ileostomys this will thicken to a porridge type consistency over a few weeks after surgery. If the ileostomy has been made very high up in the ileum the output may remain quite watery.

  • Urostomy

A urostomy is a surgical procedure which diverts the passage of urine from the kidneys and ureters to the outside of the abdomen through a stoma. The most common way to do this is where part of the small bowel is isolated and then connected to the ureters and a stoma is formed to create a channel to the surface of the abdomen.
